Clinician, Researcher, Trainer

Professional Bio: Dr. Kimberly O’Brien is the founder and director of Unlimited Resilience, LLC, a group mental health practice designed for athletes by athletes, and the director of health & wellness research and services at NDUR For Athletes. In addition to these leadership positions she is a research and training consultant at the Behavioral Research & Training Institute at Rutgers University. Dr. O’Brien received her BA from Harvard University (’00), where she was a four year member and co-captain of the hockey team which won a National Championship in 1999. She obtained her MSW (’05) and PhD (’11) from Boston College, and completed her postdoctoral fellowship (’13) at Brown University. Her research is focused on the development and testing of brief interventions for suicidal adolescents with and without substance use and their families, with an additional specialization on interventions which utilize technology. Her other research focus is on athlete mental health and suicide prevention. She has co-authored over 50 articles and book chapters related to adolescent suicide, substance use, and mental health, and was awarded the Young Investigator Research Award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in 2019. In addition to her clinical work in her group practice, Dr. O’Brien works with high school and college teams across the country on mental health, mental skills, and suicide bereavement and prevention. She continues to stay involved in athletics as she currently coaches hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, and baseball, and still plays hockey and platform tennis.

Clinician

My clinical specialization is with young athletes with mental health concerns, as well as suicidal teens and teens who use substances. I also have expertise with LGBTQ+ issues, eating concerns, depression, anxiety, and trauma.

Researcher

My research is focused on the development and testing of interventions for suicidal teens with and without substance use that leverage technology, with an additional focus on athlete mental health and suicide prevention.

Trainer

I conduct trainings for professionals, parents, and teens on mental skills and mental health for athletes, suicide risk assessment, interventions for teens who are suicidal and/or use substances, and motivational interviewing.
